Colorful and Festive " these words may well describe the highly-anticipated Pahiyas Festival of Lucban, Quezon.

Every 15th day of May, all roads lead to this humble town situated at the foot of the majestic Mt. Banahaw.

Pahiyas means to adorn the halls with agricultural products and 'kiping',a brightly-colored, wafer-thin and leaf- shaped decoration made from rice paste. During the festival, fruits and vegetable harvests of the locals become decorative pieces. Squash, chilies, beans, eggplants, corn, rice are designed and formed into different characters, and decorations. This creativity from the Lucbanons is best showcased during the festival.

Kiping is considered to be the ‘star’ of festival--- as decorations will not be complete without it. From flowers, to birds, to chandeliers, and other elements of nature are made of kiping.

What’s even so amazing with kiping is that, after the event, they can be eaten, fried or grilled.

The essence of the festival, is actually the giving of thanks and honoring St. Isidore the Laborer (Patron Saint of the Farmers), for a bountiful harvest Lucbanons receive all year round. In the afternoon of May 15, St. Isidore’s image is brought out of the church for a religious procession.

Houses along the procession route are the ones in full decor and regalia and the streets in front of them are jampacked.

Quite admirable are the owners of the houses are very welcoming and hospitable as visitors are encouraged to take souvenir photos and even partake of the feast on hand. Tourists should not leave without tasting their famous Lucban longganisa and Pancit Hab-Hab.

This year, the local government of Lucban prepared several activities, all of which will be held at Rizal Park in Poblacion. On the 15th, joining the grand Pahiyas Parade are the contestants for the Parikitan Competition, a gown competition made from indigenous materials, and the rolling stones that will be decorated with Pancit Hab-Hab!
