Nunelucio Alvarado
Nunelucio "Nune" Alvarado was born on May 5, 1950 at Pabrika, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, Philippines.
He studied Painting at the College of Fine Art at University of the Philippines - Diliman, and studied Advertising at La Consolacion College School of Architecture and Fine Arts in Bacolod City. He's the founder of Pamilya Pintura and Pintor Kulapol, and a member of Bacolod Black Artists in Asia.
He is a Visayan painter regarded as one of the most prominent artists in the Philippines. With roots on Social Realism, he attained international acclaim; his works having been reviewed by serious art critics and curators.
During the tumultuous 1970s the Philippine Art scene experienced one of its strongest and most dynamic trend - that of Social Realism during the Marcos Regime. He was among the artists who shared the view that art belongs to the people and that it is essential for the betterment and general uplift of society.
He inexhaustibly mirrors the ever-changing landscape of Philippine society through his paintings and drawings focusing on vital issues such as environmental and cultural degradation. He dedicates his achievements to the purpose of uplifting the level of understanding art, the Filipino artists, Philippine society and culture; furthermore, in the belief that art can be a weapon for social change.
He became one of the awardees, Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan sa Larangan ng Pintura of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Manila (2004). He is also a 2-time Grand Prize of the Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards (1999, 1997). He has exhibited in Manila, Bacolod, Cebu and in many galleries around the Philippines in solo exhibits and selected group shows. His art also transcends borders as it reached Australia, Singapore, USA and Japan.
