Watching the astonishing panorama of the place, you could hear the rustling of the crystal clear waters that takes away your stress. I couldn’t imagine that I could witness a haven of magnificence and nature like the Lulugayan Falls!

Lulugayan Falls is the most majestic among the hundreds of waterfalls that cascade down the 14-kilometer rapids from its source which is the enchanted Calidongan Lake that goes down the Calbiga River.

This body of splendid falls and rapids is nestled at Barangay Literon, Calbiga Western Samar. It is approximately fifty meters wide, and Lulugayan Falls has been hailed by tourists as Mini Niagara Falls.

The name “Lulugayan” was derived from a waray-waray root word “lugay” meaning to unfold a braided long hair.  Legend long ago was that there was a woman who has a very long hair who frequents the place and washes her long hair.

Calbiga, is 59 kilometers northeast of Tacloban City in Leyte. From Tacloban you can reach Calbiga proper via van or bus.  We have to travel for more or less 13 kilometers using a single motorcycle called “habal-habal” to Brgy. Literon.

The travel there was quite difficult because of the pebbly winding road. Upon reaching the barangay you have to trek less than a kilometer just to catch sight of the hidden beauty of the Lulugayan Falls.

This is excellent for adventure seekers who want to experience something new. You may feel exhausted and worn out, but it is worth the effort because the ambiance there was really jaw-dropping.
